Undergraduate Academic Standing Policies

Understanding academic standing policies is key for undergraduate students to succeed throughout their studies at Arkansas State University (A-State). Mastering these standards helps students maintain good academic standing and avoid unwanted warnings or suspensions.

Good Standing

To maintain Good Standing at Arkansas State University, undergraduate students must achieve both of the following at the same time:

• A current semester GPA of 2.000 or higher.
• A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000 (equivalent to a C average).

Note: Only grades earned at A-State are used to calculate GPA. Maintaining Good Standing allows students to continue their studies at the university without restrictions.

Academic Probation

Undergraduate students will be placed on academic probation when:

• Their cumulative institutional GPA is below 2.00. OR
• Their semester institutional GPA is below 2.00.

Probation is a serious warning that requires students to improve their academic performance to avoid more severe consequences.

Academic Suspension

Undergraduate students will be placed on academic suspension when:

• Their cumulative institutional GPA is below 2.00. AND
• Their semester institutional GPA is below 2.00. AND
• They are already on academic probation.

When suspended, students are required to take a leave of absence for a specific period of time, unless they qualify for the university's Restart@State Program. This is a special program designed to give students the opportunity to return to school after a suspension.
