Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Held on the A-State Campus

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University (A-State) and the northeast Arkansas community gathered today to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Following a procession from the Lt. Col. Frederick Turner Jr. Military Science Building and a marching band performance, attendees moved inside the Fowler Center on the A-State campus to prepare for the program.

The theme of the 23rd annual celebration was “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence.”

Throughout the program, the NEA MLK dancers and singers took the stage and treated the audience to a performance.

Elder Jervonne D. Newsome, a Jonesboro native and Dallas resident, was the event's keynote speaker. With the crowd on their feet, she encouraged attendees “not to bow down” and to continue carrying out and living by Dr. King's message.

In addition to Newsome, Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver and A-State Chancellor Dr. Todd Shields were also present and spoke during the program.

“Dr. King's message of equality and nonviolence continues to inspire all of us deeply and reminds us never to give up on creating a more just society,” Shields said. “Let us be sure to remember the struggles and great sacrifices of Dr. King and those who came before us, who continue to pursue the dream, and let us recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more just and inspiring future.”
