Summer commencement honors graduates' achievements

JONESBORO – Arkansas State University (A-State) held its summer commencement ceremony today at First National Bank Arena. More than 1,200 graduates received their degrees during the ceremony.

“I have no doubt that all of you have worked extremely hard to reach this day, overcoming life's challenges while balancing your studies with other responsibilities,” said Chancellor Todd Shields.

Dr. Shields conferred degrees on graduates from eight colleges at A-State, including Agriculture, the Neil Griffin College of Business, Education and Behavioral Science, Engineering and Computer Science, Liberal Arts and Communication, Nursing and Health Professions, Sciences and Mathematics, and University College. Graduates received doctoral, specialist, master's, bachelor's and associate degrees, along with program certificates.

Graduating with honors, Catherine Couch of Pocahontas addressed her fellow graduates.

“As we reflect on our time here, we remember the late nights spent studying, the laughter echoing across campus, the challenges we faced and the victories we celebrated,” Couch said.

Couch received a bachelor's degree in radiologic sciences and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

“We have grown not only academically but also personally. We have learned the value of resilience, the importance of kindness and the power of community.”

As part of the ceremony, an honorary doctoral degree was presented to Jonesboro businessman Nathan LaRue.

“An honorary degree is awarded to an individual who has achieved significant, lasting distinction and demonstrated outstanding accomplishment. Recipients serve as examples of excellence for all students and others in the university community,” Shields said.

An honorary Doctor of Public Service degree was presented to Dr. LaRue in recognition of his contributions to the community.

“He has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and generosity toward both Arkansas State University and the Jonesboro community. Nathan LaRue's contributions to higher education and the public good are truly deserving of recognition,” Shields added.
