Looking Back at the 1933 Wilson Hall Dedication and Continuing the Legacy at the Annual Wilson Award Banquet

On a rainy day in 1933, more than 3,500 people braved harsh weather to witness a momentous event: the dedication of Wilson Hall. This $300,000 building was constructed to honor Mr. R.E. Lee Wilson, an influential figure in Mississippi County and a dedicated, longtime member of the university's Board of Trustees. This event not only marked an important milestone in the university's physical development but also reflected deep respect for Mr. Wilson's tremendous contributions.

During that solemn ceremony, Governor Futrell delivered a remarkably meaningful statement that still resonates today: "You are the architects of your own destiny." This affirmation has inspired generations of A-State students, encouraging them to take charge of building a bright future for themselves and their communities.

Today, we continue the noble legacy of Mr. R.E. Lee Wilson through the annual Wilson Award Banquet. This special ceremony honors Arkansas State University's most outstanding graduate, carefully selected based on exceptional qualities in leadership, community service, and academic achievement. This award is not only a recognition of the student's efforts and talent but also a symbol of the values that Mr. R.E. Lee Wilson worked so hard to cultivate for the university's development.
